Crackpot Theories: The Doom That Came To Valyria
It was written that on the day of Doom every hill for 5 hundred miles had break up asunder to fill the air with ash and smoke and fire, blazes so hot and hungry that even the dragons in the sky were engulfed and consumed. Nice rents had opened within the earth, swallowing palaces, temples, complete towns. Lakes boiled or turned to acid, mountains burst, fiery fountains spewed molten rock a thousand ft into the air, purple clouds rained down dragonglass and the black blood of demons, and to the north the ground splintered and collapsed and fell in on itself and an angry sea came dashing in. The proudest metropolis in all of the world was gone immediately, its fabled empire vanished in a day, the Lands of the Lengthy Summer season scorched and drowned and blighted.
An empire built on blood and hearth. The Valyrians reaped the seed that they had sown.

It wasn’t just the Valyrian Peninsula that was affected, however an island off the coast submerged.
On the day the Doom came to Valyria, it was mentioned, a wall of water three hundred toes excessive had descended on the island, drowning a whole bunch of hundreds of men, women, and kids, leaving none to inform the tale however some fisherfolk who had been at sea and a handful of Velosi spearmen posted in a stout stone tower on the island’s highest hill, who had seen the hills and valleys beneath them flip right into a raging sea. Truthful Velos with its palaces of cedar and pink marble had vanished in a heartbeat. On the north end of the island, the ancient brick walls and stepped pyramids of the slaver port Ghozai had suffered the identical fate.
My first thought was Krakatoa, 1883.
Not solely did the principle island of Krakatoa shattered into pieces, a distant coastal city known as Merak (along with a hundred others) was submerged in a tsunami.

The precise cause for the eruption was debated for some time, and the concept sea water flooded into the magma chamber causing the explosion, was changed by the speculation that sizzling magma blended with cold magma and prompted the eruption – each circumstances agree that the strain constructed up went ballistic.

Coming back to Valyria, it’s likely that the ring of volcanoes recognized as the Fourteen Fires had been subjected to something very related, resulting in eruptions, earthquakes and full annihilation. The precise trigger that triggered that is unknown – it may have been the work of gods, sorcerers or nature’s fury. Or, it’s this crackpot theory.

The Faceless Men orchestrated the Doom of Valyria
The Kindly Man’s narrative of the first Faceless Man (emphasis mine):
“Burnt and blackened corpses have been oft present in shafts the place the rocks had been cracked or filled with holes. Yet still the mines drove deeper. Slaves perished by the rating, however their masters didn’t care. Purple gold and yellow gold and silver had been reckoned to be more treasured than the lives of slaves, for slaves have been low-cost within the previous Freehold. During struggle, the Valyrians took them by the 1000’s. In instances of peace they bred them, although solely the worst had been sent all the way down to die within the red darkness.”
“Didn’t the slaves rise up and combat ”
“Some did,” he mentioned. “Revolts had been widespread within the mines, however few accomplished much. The dragonlords of the old Freehold have been sturdy in sorcery, and lesser men defied them at their peril. The first Faceless Man was one who did.”
“Who was he ” Arya blurted, earlier than she stopped to assume.
“No one,” he answered. “Some say he was a slave himself. Others insist he was a freeholder’s son, born of noble inventory. Some will even let you know he was an overseer who took pity on his fees. The truth is, no one knows. Whoever he was, he moved amongst the slaves and would hear them at their prayers. Men of a hundred completely different nations labored in the mines, and every prayed to his own god in his own tongue, but all were praying for the same factor. It was release they requested for, an end to ache. A small thing, and simple. Yet their gods made no answer, and their suffering went on. Are their gods all deaf he wondered… until a realization got here stone island sweatshirt burgundy upon him, one night in the red darkness.
“All gods have their devices, women and men who serve them and assist to work their will on earth. The slaves weren’t crying out to 100 different gods, as it appeared, but to at least one god with a hundred completely different faces… and he was that god’s instrument. That very night he chose essentially the most wretched of the slaves, the one who had prayed most earnestly for release, and freed him from his bondage. The first gift had been given.”
Arya drew back from him. “He killed the slave ” That did not sound right. “He should have killed the masters!”
“He would convey the gift to them as well… but that could be a tale for one more day, one finest shared with nobody.”
It seems doable that the Faceless Men (He gathered more slaves to his cause as he answered their prayers to kill others and requested their service as cost.) have been one way or the other responsible for triggering the volcanic eruption.
They may have tunneled by way of the varied chambers below the Fourteen Fires, and made the sea water seep inside, slowly building up the strain and making the volcanoes explode. At least one of them escaped to Braavos and set up the Order, later constructing the Home of Black and White.
Whereas we’re in crackpot theories, there’s the chance that this trigger took a very long time to come to fruition, and during that point the first Faceless Man wanted to spare his household from the destruction and asked them to flee. The primary Faceless Man may have been a Targaryen. Valar Morghulis.
