Though Jekyll Island–one in all Georgia’s stunning Golden Isles–is primarily generally known as being the setting for the Jekyll Island Membership, once the most unique club on this planet, it also is a main fishing spot for those of us who want to enjoy a leisurely and economical day of fishing. Besides, the Georgia State File flounder was caught from this very pier.
Pier fishing is great for all members of the household because of straightforward accessibility, security, restroom amenities, refreshments and fishing tackle, all shut at hand. Don’t let anybody fool you, there are many fish to be taken across the pier and on the adjoining beaches if you prefer to try pulling a seine.
We caught several species of fish throughout the 2 afternoons we visited the Jekyll Island pier, not to mention, loads of blue crab and several nice stone crab too. We unloaded out gear on the entrance to the pier and solely walked 30 or 40 feet to a spot we–my wife and that i–each agreed seemed promising for each of our preferred fishing methods.
Not Just a Fishing Pier!
Attending to the Pier
Since we had been staying on the Jekyll Island Campground, we merely needed to drive across the street to enter the quarter mile entrance road alongside beautiful marshes to succeed in the pier.
There are fantastic spots to picnic and nature trails to observe for many who don’t need to fish. There may be all manner of wildlife to see along with the natural magnificence of the positioning.
The first thing I observed after i approached the parking space was the multitudes of mullet going round the point and straight underneath the pier near shore.
I couldn’t wait to solid my net for each large mullet to smoke or small mullet to make use of for stay bait. I’d tire of throwing the online and catching mullet earlier than my two days have been over.
In the meantime, Beth had hit the jackpot together with her crab basket catching both blue and stone crab. She was joined by a number of different ladies and all of them seemed to take pleasure in their impromptu “crab and gab” party.
No kidding, you meet some nice individuals while pier fishing which often leads to seeing them once more on later visits to the Jekyll Island Pier as well as to the campground.
Since we love each camping, fishing, and historical past this is an ideal spot for us to go to as usually as we get the prospect.
Fishing, Associates, Flounder, and Fun!
I met a couple of guys on the pier who I shortly fell into dialog with while we fished and shared a couple of beers. I had forged my web quite a few stone island m times already and had a cooler filled with big mullet (Beth neglected to tell me this was our beverage ice DOH!) however none small enough to use for dwell bait.
My new pal Steve offered to let me use some mud minnows he had caught in a trap earlier, so I used to be comfortable. I’m virtually embarrassed to purchase live bait since I love to throw a internet, it’s a manthing-o my spouse tells me. I just tell her I prefer to stay off of nature’s bounty. “Yeah right” she says. But the phrase “cheap” was by no means talked about.
The flounder, trout, sheephead and whiting have been biting properly and an occasional shark was hooked as well. One lady even caught a flounder in her open basket crab trap. As a result of the mullet have been teeming in the world, there were a few of us pulling a 50 ft. seine on Driftwood Beach, which is adjacent to the pier, and having great success at their enterprise.
Pier Fishing Necessities

The type of fishing gear required for pier fishing is determined by what type of fishing you plan to do. I might recommend always using a steel chief when pier fishing due to the barnacles on the pilings and since most saltwater fish have very sharp teeth. It is extremely frustrating to lose a nice fish when the leader is minimize or abraded and the line separates.
At the least 20 lb. line is really useful as well as loads of weight as the tides here may be very sturdy when going in or out. In case you are capable of throwing a cast internet it is possible to catch not only dwell bait of mullet or shrimp, however consuming size fish too. A 5’ or 6’ ft.–10’ to 12’ diameter when open–forged web is a lot huge.
A floating minnow bucket or battery powered aerator will are available in handy for preserving your minnows or shrimp alive until you hook that monster flounder while casting across the pilings. Sheephead and purple drum are often caught using fiddler crabs dropped right by stone island m the barnacle covered pier pilings.
One other helpful merchandise to have is a touchdown net for hoisting the fish from the water after efficiently getting the fish to the pier. Each flounder and spotted sea trout have delicate mouths and are sometimes lost when attempting to raise them to the pier using only the fishing line. I should know, I realized this lesson the onerous means!
Crabs are simply caught within the shallows using a spherical open crab entice or a field type basket with escape holes for the smaller crabs. Each blue and stone crabs are caught in these waters with the stone crab having one claw removed and returned to the water to grow one other till caught again. This same crab could furnish many such scrumptious claws during its lifetime.
However the Jekyll Island Pier isn’t only for fisherman and crabbers, there were a number of of us simply having fun with the day in the shade as they played dominoes and downed just a few adult beverages. Different sightseers meandered alongside the pier or watched excitedly as I pulled in net after internet filled with large mullet after a very giant college swam under the pier.
The Jekyll Fishing Heart–located close to the foot of the pier–not solely furnishes bait and deal with, but books a number of different types of fishing trips in the area. It’s nice to be in a position to purchase more ice in addition to, bait and snacks without having to walk very far, as is the case in many salt water pier situations.
After we had fished some time, Beth went again to the campsite and returned with Ally, our beloved Jack Russell, who proceeded to charm the other anglers as is her forte. Being a particularly good canine, she didn’t appear very thinking about examining the big crabs up close.
Just before sundown extra automobiles and trucks started to arrive within the parking space. The sunset watchers have been coming to stand their vigil as the sky turned from blue to gold and on to a vivid orange because it glowed via the huge Sydney Lanier cable bridge in the space.
It seemed to be a ritual which we heartily agreed with. What higher method to finish a perfect day of fishing, crabbing, and speaking with fishing friends as the solar slowly painted the skies as no artist might.
Although nobody can all the time guarantee fish on any fishing trip, I consider if one picked his time and tides proper he would have a superb likelihood at catching a number of fish of some kind on this pier. And in case you don’t catch anything
So what, the fantastic thing about the ocean and unsullied wilderness surrounding the Jekyll Island Pier, and the buddies you might make, is nicely well worth the trip. A win-win situation, in my view.

15 lbs. 10 0zs. Caught by a lady, as effectively.
How a lot did the record flounder weigh
I plan to do a new article about what species of fish are caught on the pier, Robert. The state report flounder was caught on the Jekyll island pier and that i’ve helped land eight+ foot sharks there also. Shrimp are so plentiful you may catch them with a throw web. Both Blue crab and Stone crab could be caught simply at the shallow end of the pier.
When the sea trout start operating you may get weary of pulling them in, however you’ll be able to at all times catch a few other instances than the primary run. As I mentioned, my favorite spot to fish..
Will you be doing an article on the sea trout run

I enjoyed the article. Great photos. This does seem to be a wonderful place to spend the day.
I say go forward and begin digging 🙂
We not too long ago had one which traveled over a mile through our farm and barely missed my home by a few hundred yards. Even then it stayed a bit off the ground nevertheless it still blew down and twisted the tops out of several hundred bushes on our property. Scary when you are feeling your house creaking and hear the noise. I may must dig a cellar if this retains up! Cheap Stone Island lol!
Properly, keep clear. I remember a number of years ago a tornado touched down close to us on hwy ninety nine. Simply missed us. Messed up part of the scenic hwy ninety nine by tearing up some stunning live oaks. Stay safe.
Oh nicely, however my fishing hubs don’t really do too effectively anyway.
I am more worried concerning the tornadoes as we have already had a couple of very shut misses in the previous few months. Still, a hurricane is dangerous information also. Thanks Terrie!
Thanks Randy. I think I’ll depart it effectively enough alone although. It was fun studying yours and hollies and there are such a lot of others on right here too that I’ve learn right this moment. Had no thought. Thought I used to be being original 🙂 . Remembered y’all had some fishing hubs however were not sure that they have been surf fishing ones. Hope you Georgia folks make it though this Hurricane season unscathed!

Hey Terrie, and thanks for stopping by and commenting on this one. By all means be happy to write about any sort of fishing and don’t worry what Hollie and I’ve coated. There’s loads of room for different angler’s experiences on HP, so do not let let that cease you. Sounds nice! 🙂

We surfed fished on Edisto Island when our youngsters were younger. Thought I might write a number of hubs on the subject, but before I started thought I would check and see for those who or habee have already written one (can’t do better than you two and wouldn’t wish to try)! Nice hub. Hoping to make my approach all the way down to Brunswick space soon. Take care. I believe I would write a hub on surf fishing for novices…I see habee has performed an ideal one on bait for surf fishing which is a remarkable hub. Boy, am I ready for summer!!!!!! Joyful fishing!
Thanks, Stephanie! Truly, I am at the Jekyll Island campground right now! I will be fishing on the pier later right this moment too. Yep, your husband missed a good chance for some nice fishing on this pier.
Thanks once more for stopping by and in your great enter.

When i tell my husband about your success fishing from the pier at Jekyll Island, he’ll be sorry that he didn’t get his fishing gear out once we camped there a few years ago! I enjoyed your fishing tales as effectively as the images of this stunning place.
Why heck yeah, WD! I’ve eaten many a hand chopped barbecue pork sandwich at the Georgia Pig! I all the time liked the outdated string of bare mild bulbs hanging outside. But with pork cooked that good, who cares about atmosphere.
And i did catch a flounder on a mud minnow, as well as a shark. Thanks for reminding me in regards to the Pig and for your time and comments.

Hey Randy – This is good. I like the world. You actually stirred some reminiscences. Is it okay to mention the Georgia Pig BBQ on the road in from I95. Back before the freeway was completed, we’d drive out of our technique to go to the little cabin. It was the only restaurant I have ever been to the place the cook wasn’t carrying a shirt. He only had on his overalls. After all, they don’t do that anymore.
Attempt a mud minnow below the pier from the water. You would possibly get a fat flounder.
Thanks CM, I could be happy to go fishing with you anytime. I plan to go back shortly when the roe mullet begin working.
Thanks for stopping by and in your time.
@Diogenes-Of course I am familiar with St. George Island, Bob! I used to spend fairly a little bit of time in that area, particularly round Mexico Beach and Port St. Joe. The fishing is great nearly anyplace alongside that stretch of the gulf.
You might be right in regards to the exercise one gets when tossing a cast internet too. I used to be worn out after these 2 days at Jekyll.
Thanks as at all times for trying out my hub and for your time and input.

I was fascinated and made envious in equal ammounts. I used to do a little bit of angling in my time. And have used the weighted forged web in Florida (St George Island…worth a visit and not far from you). Its superb train too! “Multitudes of Mullet ” If that is not the collective noun it needs to be…Bob

Thanks for the enter, Gordon. Such as you, I really like all kinds of fishing and used to own a ship for fishing on the salt flats in the nearby Gulf of Mexico.
However for ease of use, a pier is greatest for a bunch of family or mates. You probably know the flounder as a sole and the sheephead appears to be like like it’s named. It has a mouth resembling a sheep’s and the physique is striped like a drum.
Yep, it’s easy to make friends on a fishing pier as most folk are pleased to share their fishing tales.
Thanks for your time and comments and good luck in your upcoming fishing journey!

Loved the Hub, as fishing is a good ardour of mine and I really like studying about completely different experiences and fish caught around the world. I need to admit that I’ve by no means even heard of among the species you point out but that is also a learning curve and helps gasoline the ambition to go to and fish totally different elements of the world.
Fairly a topical Hub this, for me. Although I go boat fishing on the sea and seashore casting usually right here in Scotland, it has been a fair few years since I have fished from a pier. (Largely as a result of so lots of them are not any more…) Nonetheless, that’s all changing at the tip of November when a couple of of us are having a weekend’s pier fishing by day and sampling the delights of the lodge we’re staying in’s bar by night time – I’m trying forward to it. May even make new buddies like you did, as so typically happens when we’re fishing.
