Theater: Storefront Church Testifies! Can I Get An Amen
John Patrick Shanley’s new play focuses on storefront churches — these optimistic, residence-grown, generally shady, typically ramshackle but honest houses of worship that spring up in poorer neighborhoods. Slowly, the story comes into focus. Jessie took out a second loan to pay for renovations on her house, money spent by a tenant named Chester Kimmich. Chester (Ron Cephas Jones) is a preacher and he desires to open a storefront church in her ground floor. However Chester is not paying his rent and he hasn’t begun preaching and Jessie is at the end of her wits. Chester has the Spirit in him, Jessie believes, so she will not confront him. But maybe Donaldo could assist with the bank Donaldo doesn’t need to become involved however when he finds out his mother has co-signed the second mortgage, he agrees to go see Chester.
Until now, the play has wavered in and out of focus. Shanley is just too gifted not to provide some humor and vivid characters. However the tone is all around the map and some of the characters — particularly the twitchy, facially deformed loan officer who was shot within the face by his (now ex-) spouse — feel like “characters” instead of people.
Then Donaldo walks into the storefront church the place Chester sits quietly at nighttime, struggling. In an electrifying and absorbing scene, these two sterling actors confront one another. Here’s what’s happening, we think: Chester is having a crisis of religion and Donaldo has been sucked into his life so Chester might be woken out of his slumber.

Chester is aware of it is a soul-sucking enterprise with minimal wage jobs that in a approach is exactly what his community doesn’t want.
